Gary has 30 years of IT transformation experience gained across several technology companies serving the UK public sector. He currently leads the Central Government team at Alteryx, helping clients to accelerate digital transformation by equipping all staff, irrespective of technical ability, with the tools and skills needed to progress their analytic journey. With a keen interest in improving data literacy within government, Gary has championed extension of the Alteryx SparkED Analytics Education Programme to include graduates, interns, independent learners, and those on the Civil Service Fast Stream.

A strong data culture allows for more informed policy-making, improved service delivery, and increased transparency and accountability - and opens the door for innovation, as data-driven insights suggest fresh approaches. What steps should public sector organisations take to foster an environment where data is central to decision making and where the workforce has the skills and tools to effectively use data? 

  1. Data Leadership: It's crucial to have strong data leadership to advocate for data use, set a vision for how data can benefit the organisation, and drive the integration of data into daily operations and strategic decisions.
  2. Culture Shift: How can we foster an environment where data isc onsistently used in decision-making? 
  3. Skills and Literacy: What is our current level of data literacy, and what steps are we taking to upskill our workforce in this area? How are we ensuring that staff are equipped with the right tools to use data effectively?
